Can you please describe your family, where you live and how long you’ve lived there. Why did you choose to live in this area?
I live in Scarsdale, which is part of Westchester County, just north of New York City. We actually moved here from the city last summer – so going on one year in the ‘burbs! I am married and have two kids with my husband – my son is 6 and finishing Kindergarten and my daughter is 4. We chose Westchester because it is actually where I grew up (although not in Scarsdale) so it was nice to go somewhere both familiar and new at the same time. We also love the proximity to New York City – just 30 minutes on the train!
When did you start working with Mac & Mia and why did you join the team?
I just joined Mac & Mia this past spring. I was excited by the opportunity to be part of a company that empowers and supports women and working moms with a truly flexible, freelance work environment. It is not as easy to find as you might think!
What is your favorite part of being a stylist?
I love working with clients to help them find unique looks for their children. I especially love when a client tells me that I sent something that she/he would not have picked out had they seen it in a store or online, but absolutely love for their child! I also love being able to make the shopping experience easier – and more enjoyable! – for busy parents.
What was your background prior and how does it help you with your current role?
I worked in publishing ad/sales for many years, focusing on building partnerships with fashion and prestige beauty brands. I love sales and working with different people and fashion is such a huge part of my life. I have always been the friend that others go to for shopping help and advice – anything from how to wear a new leather jacket to what fun dresses to buy for summer. I also have a degree in psychology, which I have always felt helped me with the sales process and being able to work well and relate to others and how best to meet their needs.
If someone is considering becoming stylist, what would you like to tell them?
This is such a great job for people from all walks of life. While I personally have fashion and sales experience, it isn’t totally necessary. There is so much training available and once you get your first few clients, the ball really starts rolling. The experience of receiving a box was critical to me in understanding the position – there is this wonderful surprise & delight moment of opening up a box and as a stylist, it is what you want your clients to experience! I have also focused on really learning about the different brands we carry and what my favorite pieces are for specific styles, boys or girls!
And if someone is considering using Mac & Mia for the first time, would would you tell them?
I want to hear all about your kid’s style! The more you share with me, the more likely it is that I can meet your needs. I am happy to check out your personal Instagram, and you can always tell me your budget. As always, Mac & Mia isn’t a subscription service, you simply sign up for a box when you want one, and there’s never any pressure to keep items you don’t want, but I have a feeling once you open the box, you’ll love it all!
What’s a trend in kids clothing you’re loving for spring/summer?
I think tie-dye is a really fun trend for kids – and adults! – this spring/summer. I also love pairing pieces that aren’t always expected. For example, we have these great tutu skirts right now in different colors, which sounds dressy, but pair it with a casual tank or tee and sneakers and it is such a fun look! I also always love a good soft t-shirt with a fun graphic and we have a ton right now!
What should all parents shopping for kids keep in mind, in terms of finding clothes that kids will love?
I like to involve my kids in the box-opening experience. It is exciting for them when a new Mac & Mia box arrives and also fun to get to help open it up and see all of the beautifully packaged items inside. There is usually a little non-clothing surprise for the kids in there as well! If you get a chance to say something like, “Oh look at this red t-shirt! Red is your favorite color!” they may be more likely to love the item. Kids love comfortable clothing, so anything that looks great, is comfortable for the child, and has easy washability is a win-win in my book! We always like to share some local recommendations from moms we interview, in case people are considering moving to your area, or just visiting! Could you please provide examples of places you love for 4-6 of the below? Thank you!
Eat with/without kids – My husband and I love sushi – either ordering in or going out. Kumo and Nikkei of Peru are two of my favorites locally. With the kids, 25 North is a steady favorite and on Sundays, they bring the kids downstairs to the kitchen to make ice cream sundaes. Such a treat for them – and for the parents who get a few moments of quiet!
Have a date night – Harvest on Hudson in Hastings and Red Hat in Irvington are longtime favorites and close to where I grew up. We also have had fun meals at Rafele in Rye and EastEnd in Greenwich.
Spend time together as a family indoors/outdoors – My kids love the Greenburgh Nature Center – another local spot that I went to growing up! They have many different animals that kids can see/feel up close and also a really nice playground. We also have had fun bowling together at Bowlmor Lanes in White Plains.
Shop for yourself/shop for your kids – Havana Jeans in Rye has a great selection of denim and easy basics for me – I actually shopped there growing up and so it has been fun re-visiting the store as an adult! Shopbop and Intermix are other go-to’s for me always. For my kids I shop all over and that is actually one of the things I have loved about Mac & Mia – I would have to go to a ton of different stores to find the selection of brands that we carry all in one place!
Spa/salon – I love blow-outs and when I have time to treat myself to one, I have been going to Plushblow in Scarsdale. For my kids’ haircuts, I have been taking them to Totally Hott in Rye Ridge – they have a special on kids haircuts every Wednesday.
Grab coffee – The Granola Bar is great to grab coffee or a bite with a friend. They have a few locations locally in Westchester/Connecticut.
Other places you just love in your area that you go to on a regular basis Any hidden treasures you want to share?
Riviera Bakehouse in Ardsley has the most amazing cakes – my kids have had their birthday cakes from their every year, even when we lived in the city! I love their rainbow cookies (my favorite!) and I have also discovered great rainbow cookies at Scarsdale Pastry Shop.
I loved Le Pain Quotidien when we lived in the city and was so happy to learn when we moved up here that there is one in Rye. My daughter and I like to go on lunch dates there!
Current Home in Scarsdale is another store that I quickly grew to love when we moved. They have beautiful pieces for the home and it is also now my go-to for gifts!
Anything else you’d like us to know about you, or your Mac & Mia experience?
Random fact about me is that I love to sing and was in an acapella group in college.
Some of my favorite brands that Mac & Mia currently carries are LA Made, Miki Miette, ESME, Sol Angeles, Hoonana.
